RPS Klotz Associates served as engineer and project manager for a world-class, competition-level skate park in north Houston. The largest skate park in North America, the park features 50,000-square-foot skate bowls, including transitional and street skating challenges for beginners, intermediate and expert levels. Dylan Park, located on a nearby tract, is a 1-acre "park with no boundaries" specifically designed for special needs and mobility challenged children. Sustainable design features included bioswales, solar lighting, vegetated erosion controls, pervious walkway materials and maintenance of existing wetlands by including them into the green areas of the park. Cut and fill balance within the project limits was achieved by incorporating grass covered mounds as observation/picnic areas around the skating bowl areas.
This project was awarded a 2015 ACEC Texas Engineering Excellence Gold Medal.
