This project involved design of a 3-mile road across a rural, heavily wooded new location. Klotz Associates provided project management and design services, including resolution of significant issues with earthwork, erosion control, drainage, and environmental constraints. In the rolling terrain, minimizing earthwork was key to holding down project costs and minimizing the acquisition of right of way (ROW). The challenge of erosive soils was resolved with placement of permanent controls such as rock filter dams and articulating concrete block. The road was maintained above the 100-year flood level of Robinson Creek. Large cross culverts were used to provide roadway alignments that avoided environmental hot spots and reduced the amount of tree removal required. All segments of the project were completed ahead of schedule and under budget. With a construction cost of $10,000,000, this was the single-largest roadway project ever undertaken by the City of Huntsville.
