The scope of this ongoing project includes design of concrete pavement replacement on 3,000 feet of runway as well as the bonded concrete overlay of 5,000 feet of existing concrete runway and connecting taxiways. Klotz Associates performed an analysis to determine the need for concrete overlay by using non-destructive pavement analysis and finite-element computation of pavement performance under anticipated aircraft traffic. This allowed determination of required pavement thicknesses and further crack-propagation analysis for confirmation of overlay thickness to ensure against pavement shoving. During design of the pavement overlay, the firm determined that additional requirements must be specified for installation of the overlay to ensure a full bonding of the overlay to the existing pavement.
