Klotz Associates designed the largest infrastructure project the City of Tomball has undertaken to date. The Southside Utilities Project included almost 4 miles of 12-inch water line, 3 ½ miles of 4- and 6-inch gas line, and more than 3 miles of 18- to 30-inch sanitary sewer from 8 to 30 feet deep. A 12-foot diameter triplex lift station at the South Wastewater Treatment Plant also was part of the design. Project construction began in February 2004; its completion is anticipated in Spring 2005.
Aside from the size of this project, the real challenge was coordination with multiple jurisdictions and affected stakeholders. A Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) highway, construction by the Harris County Flood Control District, a railroad track, a radio tower, and countless invaluable trees were adjacent to project construction. Dozens of homes and businesses along the alignment of the utilities were affected, and continuous access to each had to be maintained during the 14-month project.
Klotz Associates prepared design that was functional, practical and cost efficient. The firm also managed coordination with numerous entities, business owners, and property owners to make this job a success.
