The existing Solids Handling Building at the Main Wastewater Treatment Plant was constructed as part of the original plant in 1953. The Solids Handling Building originally included a furnace to dry the treatment plant solids. In 1975, the solids handling process was modified to include two filter presses to replace the sludge drying furnace. In 1993, the building was modified again to replace the filter presses with a new belt filter press.
Klotz Associates was retained by the City of Galveston to perform an evaluation of the Solids Handling Building. Klotz Associates’ recommendation of demolishing the existing building and erecting a new building in its place was the most economical and desirable option for our client. A new pre-fabricated metal building with two new belt filter presses was constructed. The new building has plenty of room for expansion. This upgrade to the sludge dewatering facilities at the Main Wastewater Treatment Plant was a very innovative solution to the problems the City faced with their aging facility.
