TxDOT Waco District Selected for US Highway 190 Project from Spur 172 to W.S. Young Boulevard, Waco, Texas
Out of the five firms competing for one contract (including three large international firms), Klotz Associates, Inc. has just been selected by the TxDOT Waco District to perform engineering services to include design for the expansion of 5 miles of US 190 main lanes from 4 to 6 lanes and reconstruction of the frontage roads and bridges. The scope of work includes PS&E for roadway, paving, drainage, bridges, signing, pavement marking, signals, TCP, SW3P, utility engineering for US 190 from Spur 172 to W.S. Young, and the eastbound frontage road and ramp reconstruction at the Clear Creek Rd. / US 190 Interchange.  This portion of highway carries more traffic than I-35 in Waco.  Improvements will include improved traffic conversions related to safety with Ft. Hood. 

TxDOT Waco PS&E for IH-35 from FM 2843 to FM 2484, Bell County, Texas

Klotz Associates has been selected by TxDOT Waco District to prepare PS&E for IH-35 from FM 2843 to FM 2484 in the City of Salado, Bell County, Texas.  IH-35 is one of the most heavily traveled, and most dangerous rural interstates in the Country.  We will be designing the expansion of IH-35 from 4 to 6 lanes, and converting the frontage roads from 2-way to one-way traffic.  The project is particularly sensitive because of the high number of historic sites in Salado.  We will be impacting the historic Stagecoach Inn and will be crossing the environmentally sensitive Salado Creek.  The project length is 3.0 miles and the cost estimate is $65 million. 

Orchard Road Rehabilitation, San Antonio, Texas

Klotz Associates provided design phases services for the rehabilitation of Orchard Road.  Currently, Orchard Road is an uncurbed residential roadway that extends approximately 2,740 linear feet from W. W. White to West Hein Road.  The design included pavement reconstruction; the addition of curbs, sidewalks and storm sewers; includes compliance to TDLR and ADA regulation; and the replacement of both an 8-inch water line and an 8-inch sanitary sewer line.  Construction is planned for early 2010. 

City of Huntsville Design of New Location Veterans Memorial Drive, Huntsville, Texas
This project involved design of a 3-mile road across a rural, heavily wooded new location.  Klotz Associates provided project management and design services, including resolution of significant issues with earthwork, erosion control, drainage, and environmental constraints.  In the rolling terrain, minimizing earthwork was the key to holding down project costs and minimizing the acquisition of right of way.  The challenge of erosive soils was resolved with placement of permanent controls, such as rock filter dams and articulating concrete block.  Large cross culverts were used to provide roadway alignments that avoided environmental hot spots and reduced the amount of tree removal required.  All segments of the project were completed ahead of schedule and under budget.  With a construction cost of $10,000,000, this was the single-largest roadway project ever undertaken by the City of Huntsville.

Hays County FM 1626A Reconstruction, Hays County, Texas
Klotz Associates is providing civil engineering services for the FM 1626 (Segment A) project, which is a 3.2 mile reconstruction of an existing two-lane minor collector to a four-lane roadway with 10 foot shoulders.  The limits for this project are between FM 2770 and RM 967 in Hays County, Texas.  FM 1626 is a TxDOT pass-through toll finance project.  Klotz Associates is contracted to complete both the schematic design and PS&E through final design.  There are two bridges that fall within the project limits.  The bridges over Onion Creek and Mustang Creek are 520 and 439 feet in length, respectively.  These will be widened a minimum of 40 feet for the two additional lanes and shoulders.  A portion of the roadway will be curb and gutter, with an enhanced sidewalk. This will allow for the improved pedestrian access to the elementary school that is within the project limits.  The proposed roadway run-off will be treated, per the TCEQ requirements for water quality within the Edward’s Aquifer Recharge Zone.

Brazoria County Blue Water Highway Wetlands Permitting / Improvements, Angleton, Texas
Klotz Associates worked with Brazoria County in the days following Hurricane Ike to support the reconstruction of the Blue Water Highway between Surfside and San Luis Pass.  Over five miles of the roadway was destroyed requiring temporary solutions to allow access.  Close coordination was accomplished with the General Land Office of Texas in completing the initial design and bidding of the roadway base.  We provided environmental consulting services related to acquiring a section 404 permit for Blue Water Highway.

City of Baytown Road Reconstruction, Baytown, Texas
Klotz Associates designed the proposed pavement reconstruction for 14,870 feet of roadway for various streets in the City of Baytown including major thoroughfares and connector streets. The project also included replacement of utility crossings, drainage improvements, and the design of upsized culverts for two Harris County Flood Control District channel crossings.

High Profile Project at Texas A&M University - Wellborn Road Grade Separation at College Station, Texas
This project includes schematic, final design, bid and communication phase services to build two vehicular / pedestrian passageways beneath Wellborn Road and the Union Pacific tracks. The Union Pacific Railroad track and Wellborn Road divide the Texas A&M University Campus in two parts. The railroad and Wellborn Road are an especially strong barrier that hinders interdisciplinary activity and makes establishing a pedestrian campus difficult. The addition of two proposed underpasses, when built, will accommodate all modes of traffic. Under this contract, Klotz Associates, along with the subconsultants will perform schematic design, traffic study, hydrologic and hydraulic study. Klotz will also prepare construction documents that include roadway design, drainage design, signing and pavement marking, retaining wall design, bridge design, landscape design, and miscellaneous detail design. Montgomery County Widening of FM 1488, Montgomery County, Texas
FM 1488 is an east/west State Highway that runs through the southwest part of Montgomery County. The County, with funding from TxDOT, is widening FM 1488 from a 2-lane road to a 4-lane divided roadway. The scope of work included the design for almost 6 miles of proposed pavement design including the design of three signalized intersections and numerous cross street intersections. The project also required sidewalk design and drainage considerations totaling almost $38 million in estimated construction costs. Traffic progression through the alignment was a major consideration for the signal timing. Preserving the existing decorative subdivision entrances and signage was a priority.

New Braunfels County Line Road, New Braunfels, Texas
Klotz Associates prepared complete plans, specifications, and estimates for the extension of County Line Road from Pahmeyer Road to FM 1044. The project involved design of approximately 1,900 linear feet of a new four-lane roadway with curb and gutter and sidewalks. Specific relevant issues addressed during this project included a new 4-lane roadway on new alignment; Drainage analysis of this watershed was required and performed; Hydraulic analysis of proposed drainage easement to be granted by adjacent property owner; Use of the City of New Braunfels’ Drainage and Erosion Control Manual; Preparation of Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP); Coordination with New Braunfels Utilities and familiarity with City of New Braunfels bidding and construction documents and processes.
